A practical guide to selecting between 10mm and 50mm rubber flooring based on your gym type, equipment, and use intensity.
Choosing the right thickness is the single most important decision when specifying gym flooring. Too thin and your subfloor suffers, too thick and you waste budget on capacity you do not need.
Rubber gym flooring absorbs impact in two ways: compression (cushioning the drop) and dispersion (spreading the load across the subfloor). Thicker rubber does both better, but at higher cost and with potential equipment stability issues if over-specified.
For most commercial gyms, a zoned approach works best — heavier rubber in free-weight platforms, mid-range in cardio, lighter rolls in cool-down and stretching zones.
