Yes, new gym mats made from rubber have a noticeable smell when first unpacked. This is the natural odor of vulcanized rubber, not a sign of poor quality or harmful chemicals.

Rubber tiles (10mm to 40mm): Stronger initial smell. The 40mm tiles take longest, usually 7-10 days for the strong phase, then another week to become mild.

Virgin rubber products clear about 30% faster than recycled rubber products. But recycled rubber is more affordable and equally safe once the smell dissipates.

How to Reduce the Smell Faster

I always give gym owners the same advice before installation day. These steps work.

Unroll or unpack early: If possible, open the packaging 2-3 days before installation in a ventilated area. We have warehouse space in Bhiwandi where some clients do this before we transport to their gym.

Ventilate aggressively: Keep all windows and doors open. Use exhaust fans. Point regular fans toward the flooring to increase air circulation. The first 48 hours are most important.

Clean after installation: Mop the floor with a mild detergent and water solution. This removes surface residue and helps reduce odor. Don't use harsh chemicals; they can damage the rubber.

Install during off hours: Many gym owners in Navi Mumbai and Thane schedule installations on Sunday evening or Monday when the gym is closed for 24-48 hours. This gives the floor time to air out before members arrive.

Use air purifiers: If you're setting up a yoga studio or Pilates space where people are close to the floor, run an air purifier with activated carbon filters for the first week.

Does Thicker Flooring Smell More?

Yes, absolutely. Thickness directly correlates with initial odor intensity.

This doesn't mean thicker is worse. For heavy weightlifting areas, powerlifting gyms, or CrossFit boxes, you need 30mm or 40mm flooring for proper impact absorption. The smell is temporary; the durability is permanent.

If smell is a major concern and you don't need maximum thickness, the 15mm tiles at Rs.85 per sq ft are a sweet spot. They provide good protection for most commercial gym activities and have a moderate, fast-clearing smell.

When Should You Worry About Smell?

If the smell persists strongly beyond 4 weeks, something isn't right. Contact your supplier.

In eight years, I've had exactly two cases where smell lasted longer than a month. Both were installation errors, not product issues. One gym in Goregaon had installed the flooring over a damp concrete slab. The moisture trapped VOCs underneath. Once we fixed the moisture issue and reinstalled, the smell cleared normally.

Another case in Kurla involved a storage room with zero ventilation. The room itself was the problem. Once we added ventilation, the issue resolved in days.

Chemical or toxic smells are different from rubber smell. Rubber smells earthy, like new tires or pencil erasers. If you smell something sharp, chemical, or burning, that's not normal rubber odor. Stop using the floor and call your supplier immediately.
